ADVICE TO NEW BARANGAY, SK BRASS

STA. BARBARA—Gov. Amado Espino III has called on newly elected and reelected barangay officials in Pangasinan to “be true to their mandate” by serving the people the best way they can as they had promised their constituents.

Speaking to newsmen after the turnover of shallow tube wells to various farmers’ cooperatives in the province on May 17, Espino said he expected to work closely with the newly elected barangay and sangguniang kabataan (SK) officials on many programs and projects.

Asked what advice he can give the newly elected and reelected barangay officials, Espino said: “I believe that their motive to serve is noble so I expect them to carry out their plans right away when they begin their term.”

“For instance, we have many programs in agriculture that need the help of barangay and SK officials because they are in touch with farmers in their respective localities,” he added.

The newly elected SK officials, meanwhile, must influence and motivate their peers to work harder for the benefit of their communities, he said.

Reminded that a few elected barangay officials may not have taken a drug test, Espino said he will study other options to make them take the test without making it compulsory.

“In our case, we convinced our employees to take the drug test,” he recalled. “Ginawa po nila yon, parang honor na po sa kanila na malaman na hindi sila gumagamit ng illegal na droga,” he added.

He said he will confer with the incumbent president of the provincial Liga and the mayors how to convince the barangay officials to take the drug test.

Espino is a former barangay chairman of his native Bautista after he served as mayor for three terms. As barangay captain, he was elected president of the Liga ng Barangay Provincial Federation before he became governor.  (Leonardo Micua)
