Dion wins in hotly contested polls in Calasiao
INCUMBENT KAP LOSES IN BUED
CALASIAO—The battle royale for kapitan slot in Barangay Bued this town, between incumbent Allan Roy Macanlalay and comebacking Carlito Dion was close but was eventually won by the latter by just 100 votes amid charges and counter charges of vote-buying.
Four kagawads in Dion’s ticket also won with him.
This after their intense political rivalry led the police and the Commission on Elections to declare the barangay an election watch-list area during the May 14 elections.
Macanlalay is the son of former Calasiao Mayor Roy Macanlalay who was also defeated in the 2016 election. The elder Macanlalay is gearing up for a rematch with his conqueror, incumbent Mayor Joseph Arman Bauzon.
Residents of Calasiao watched the election in Barangay Bued with bated breath as it was deemed a prelude to the expected return bout between Bauzon and Macanlalay.
There were reports of massive vote-buying in Barangay Bued and in other parts of Calasiao with some voters reportedly receiving as much as P2,000 each from the candidates.
Some candidates for kagawads were giving out trays of table eggs, plastic pails, water pitchers and basin to households.
On election day a squad of the Philippine Army was sent to Calasiao while policemen kept watch of Barangay Bued.
A few days before the election, two armed men, both from Sta. Ignacia, Tarlac, were arrested in barangay San Vicente while waiting for a candidate they did not identify.
The two men were allegedly employed as bodyguards of a candidate for barangay kapitan in Barangay San Vicente.
There were also reports of town officials who heavily campaigned for candidates in some barangays. (Leonardo Micua)
