FOR ENCROACHING SALVAGE ZONE

LESSONS from the Boracay closure have prompted both the San Fabian municipal government and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) to start assessing boundaries of areas occupied by beach sheds, restaurants, hotels and inns along the town’s coastal area.

CENRO chief Celso Salazar said he signed a memorandum of agreement with San Fabian Mayor Constante Agbayani on April 11 for the assessment and delineation of the salvage zone’s boundaries by the beachfront.

Under the MOA, all sheds and establishments with or without land titles operating within the salvage zone, will be removed by the San Fabian government.

Both offices also agreed to immediately order the closure of beach sheds that drain their wastewater into the sea, the source of complaints from recent visitors to the beach.

During an initial ocular inspection, Salazar saw that a number of establishments in Barangay Mabilao have encroached the salvage zone by about 4 to 10 sq. meters.

Back when the Lingayen Baywalk was constructed, the salvage zones in Lingayen and Binmaley were also assessed.

The San Fabian beach is among the six areas in Region 1 prioritized for assessment, similar to the action taken by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Boracay.

Salazar said the same will be done soon in Dagupan and Labrador. (Leonardo Micua)
