SENATORS’ GUARANTEE

LINGAYEN–The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections set on May 14 this year will push through as scheduled notwithstanding the House of Representatives’ approval of the bill postponing the selections anew to October on second reading.

Three senators, namely, Nancy Binay, JV. Ejercito and Joel Villanueva, who were in Pangasinan on Thursday were one in making the categorical statement that the Barangay and SK elections will push through as scheduled.

Senator Binay said there is not enough time in the senate to pass a legislation for the postponement of these elections for the third time.

“Assuming that the Congress version (of the bill) is transmitted to the Senate on Monday or Tuesday, it would be too late since Wednesday is our last day of sessions,” Binay said.

At the same time, she said that no senator filed a measure in the upper chamber seeking to postpone the barangay elections.

With no bill filed, no hearing could be conducted in the Senate relative to the postponement of the two elections, she intoned.

Para sa amin tuloy ang election because it is also high time that we hold these elections,” Binay said, insinuating that it is the sentiment of Senators Ejercito and Villanueva as well.

Villanueva informed newsmen that he and Senator Ejercito were among the senators who authored the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Law whose beautiful feature, he said, is its anti-dynasty provision.

Villanueva also gave his guarantee that the Barangay and SK elections are going to push through.,

“The elections will definitely push through, and it is highly improbable that it will not push through given already the time constraints to pass another legislation postponing these,” he said.

Villanueva also admitted being the author of the first bill and second bill postponing these elections last year.

Senator Binay noted the move in the lower house is to postpone these elections to October is too late because the Commission on Elections has started preparations for the 2019 elections.

“If we move the Barangay and SK elections to October, we may be running out of time to prepare for the 2019 election.”, Binay said. (Leonardo Micua)
