LINGAYEN—Holders of fishery lease agreements in Region 1 that used to suffer from low fish production can finally expect to boost their yield with the help of a private company.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 1 Director Nestor Domenden said Feedmix will pursue a contract-growing scheme in the fishery sector, a scheme that has been proven very successful in livestock sector.

Domenden said contract-growing scheme starts from stocks, feeds, technology that has to be applied, including marketing.

The project will start initially in government fishponds leased to private persons, he said.

He said based on study conducted, the FLA beneficiaries are granted low lease rates so they become lax. And when fees of FLAs were recently raised 20 times higher from P50 per hectare a year to P1,000 as graduated, the FLA holders protested.

These are mostly found in Pangasinan coastal areas like Infanta, Dasol, Bolinao, Alaminos City, Bani, Anda, Sual. In La Union, FLAs are in Sto. Tomas town.

Domenden said the reason Feedmix is very much willing to finance the FLA holders is their export business of semi-processed bangus and vannamei shrimps is growing.

A Feedmix representative advised fishery stakeholders in a forum last March 16 to shift to polyculture for better profits. (Eva Visperas)
