Comelec all set for May 14 Barangay, SK polls
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Pangasinan is now 85 percent ready for the conduct of simultaneous Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in 1,364 barangays all over the province on May 14 this year.
Provincial Elections Supervisor Marino Salas said the elections will definitely push through after Congress failed to pass a law postponing these political exercises anew for the third time.
“Though the House of Representatives passed a bill postponing these elections, this failed to reach the Senate before it adjourned its session,” Salas said.
He said many of their preparatory activities have been completed and the latest activity, the assignment of teachers to comprise the Board of Election Tellers (BET), is ongoing. and the Election Officers (EO’s) from the 44 municipalities and 4 cities have already been called for a briefing.
After the Lenten break, Salas is expected to call for a command conference with it’s counterpart from PNP and AFP to finalize security preparations.
He said there may be 17,000 teachers to comprise the BET to be assigned in every clustered precinct in the province.
The election period will start from April 14 to May 14 and gun ban will start on April 14 and reminded local governments that appointments and creation of position in the government will also be prohibited by law ten days before election day.
The filing of certificates of candidacy will be from April 4 to April 20 while the campaign period will be from May 4 to 14.
Salas said the voting and counting will be done manually and the ballots are color-coded, one color for the barangay election and another color for the SK election.
Based on the SK Reform Act, voters from 18 to 30 years old can vote twice, one for the SK election and another for the barangay election. He pointed out, however, that those 15 to 17 years old who registered and considered as first-time voters can vote only in the SK election.
The names of voters and their respective polling precincts are now posted in all town and city election offices. (Leonardo Micua/Nora Dominguez)
