Successful staging of R1AA cited
NOT only did the Pangasinan’s competing teams reap honors for the province but the peaceful conduct of the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet projected the peace and order being enjoyed by Pangsinenses.
P/Superintendent Benjamin Ariola, Alaminos City Chief of Police and ground commander of the R1AA meet, said the five-day event was generally peaceful, except one vehicular accident that involved a van of contingents from Ilocos Sur and a tricycle but no one was injured and a case of theft wherein a P2,500 cash of a guardian of one of the athlete was lost while inside a billeting area in Alaminos.
The local police strictly implemented a gun ban and liquor ban from February 11 to February 17 to ensure peacefulness and orderliness during the conduct of R1AA meet. No reported cases of violation of gun ban and liquor ban were reported.
The local police also implemented a truck ban in all the main roads in the city proper to ease traffic for the arrival of 10,000 delegates and 3,000 tourists who arrived for the event and for the Hundred Islands.
Ariola said the security plan was made possible with the help of augmentation personnel from the Provincial Command that included 144 from PNP, SWAT, Regional Mobile Force Company, K9 and Explosive and Ordinance Division with civilian volunteers, NGO’s, with Bureau of Fir Protection, CDRRMO equipped with water tanks, ambulance and mobile patrol cars who were deployed at the playing venues and billeting areas.
PNP, with the Task Force Isla and teams of the Bantay Dagat also extended the security plan for the tourists and to prevent illegal fishing.
Alaminos City Mayor Arthur Celeste said though it was a great challenge to accept the hosting of R1AA, but through the help of the Provincial Government and Congressman Boying Celeste, the city government was able to fill one thousand truck load of soil to elevate the ground of Alaminos City National High School that served as the playing venue for the athletic events of the R1AA meet.
Since Alaminos City has no facility for athletic events, the provincial government helped to prepare the athletic grounds.
The mayor expressed hope that the Alaminos City National High School athletic field will be rubberized next year as a venue forR1AA or Palarong Pambansa.
