LINGAYEN, Pangasinan—Governor Amado I. Espino III formally opened the 2nd season of the Pangasinan Inter-LGU Unity Games featuring 20 competing teams for basketball and 16 contingents for volleyball on February 22 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) gymnasium.

In total, there are 20 participating local government units which were clustered into two groups. Division 1 is composed of cities and 1st and 2nd class municipalities, while Division II comprises the municipalities with 3rd to 5th income classes.

Expressing elation over the turn-out of the first Unity Games last year, Gov. Espino thanked all LGU heads for participating again this year as he stressed that their participation only proves their willingness to join hands with the provincial government.

As such, the governor pointed out that the activity does not only serve as a venue for physical fitness but an event where LGUs can show “unity and camaraderie” among other participating teams.

In stating this, Gov. Espino noted that the teams can “unify themselves, and the province, through sports.”

Meanwhile, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario who represented Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr. said that sports being one of the pet projects of Gov. Espino, unifies Pangasinenses as one family.

It is through these sports activities that Pangasinenses can express their unity, he added.

Game proper immediately followed the opening program with Calasiao and Binmaley bannering the first-ever match in basketball. Team Calasiao, which was captained by Mayor Joseph Arman Bauzon with the assistance of Vice Mayor Mahadeva Das B. Mesina, defeated Binmaley led by Councilor Vismark Valerio, 112-90.

Here are the results of the games on the opening day:

Basketball: Game 1- Calasiao (112) vs Binmaley (90); Game 2- Mabini (91) vs Labrador (74). Volleyball: Game 1- Sison (75) vs Mapandan (16); Game 2- Bayambang (63)    vs San Carlos City (60).

In Season 1, Urdaneta City emerged champion in basketball under Division I while Urbiztondo bagged the championship crown in Division II. LGU Alaminos City and Burgos notched the championship in volleyball for Divisions 1 and II, respectively. (Ruby R. Bernardino)
