DOTr assures jeepney operators assistance
JEEEPNEY MODERNIZATION PLAN
DEPARTMENT of Transportation Undersecretary Thomas Orbos has assured officials of the transport group AUTOPro that they will be assisted in acquiring their e-jeepneys if they organize themselves for purposes of securing bank loans.
“We will consider them (AUTOPro) as pilot cooperative that will be the first one to own new vehicles in the new fleet modernization program,” said Orbos.
Denying that the e-jeepney is too costly, Orbos said the units range from P700,000 to P1.5 million and final price will depend on the operator’s preferred optional features, i.e. air-condition, etc.
He said the jeepney modernization program is providing P80,000 subsidy and the banks will charge nominal interest rates.
Noting that a standard jeepney with a new engine now costs from Php1.2 million to Ph1.3 million, the e-jeepney therefore is about that much or even lower.
“I would not say it is affordable but I would rather say it is very reasonable,” Orbos said. (Leonardo Micua)
