Cong Toff seeks regular status for BHWs, tanods

A BILL was filed in Congress by Fourth District Rep. Christopher “Toff” de Venecia seeking to regularize the positions of Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and barangay tanods in the country.

Calling the grassroots workers as unsung heroes, De Venecia stressed the need to finally give long overdue recognition to BHWs and tanods who often risk their lives in order to save others and in preserving peace and order in their villages.

The BHWs and the tanods are getting just a pittance as honorarium from the local government units and the barangays and in order to compensate them properly for their work, he said they should be made as regular workers in the barangays provided with more benefits, including retirement and a security of tenure.

He said BHWs and tanods in their present status are vulnerable to politicians but as regular employees, they will be protected by civil service and can be removed only for cause.

In his series of consultations with the BHWs and barangay tanods in his district, regular salary and security of tenure are what the two sectors in the barangays need to have.

He said the bill is still in the committee level but he and his colleagues in the House are working to have it passed.

He asked BHW and barangay tanod organizations in the country to secure commitment of their respective representatives to support his bill. (Leonardo Micua)
