THE team of Pangasinan OFW families dominated the competitions held in last year’s celebration of the annual Overseas Filipino Workers’ (OFWs) Family Day celebration for Region 1 when the rich and colorful cultures of the Ilocos provinces and Pangasinan were featured.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) gathered more than 1,800 OFW dependents at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena, Laoag City, on December 10, 2017.
Pangasinan won the Festival Dance competition where the four provinces interpreted their local products, cultures, and tourist attractions in dances with its performance that combined Villasis’ Talong, Dagupan’s Bangus, San Carlos’ Mango.
Ilocos Norte portrayed the daklisan dance, the indigenous method of catching fish; Ilocos Sur made an ode to the infamous Ilokano dish, the pinakbet; La Union showed the Ilokano way of gratitude through the panagyaman dance.
Pangasinan also led in the Christmas fashion show and ramp modeling and in the OWWA Tawag ng Tanghalan, where Western Pangasinan’s Gemma Tapong, a former OFW from Macau, dominated the stage.
Also part of the activity was the #OWWAcares information caravan that featured new and updated programs and services of OWWA, among them the MedPlus and Welfare Assistance Programs, Balik Pinas, Balik Hanapbuhay Program and the scholarship programs.
OFW associations also tested their entrepreneurial skills in the OFW Bazaar, where they sold their various goods as part of their OWWA-assisted livelihood projects.
