LINGAYEN, Pangasinan—In keeping with the Filipino tradition of holding the nine-day novena every December, hundreds of Pangasinense Catholics from different barangays of Lingayen and nearby towns of Binmaley and Bugallon attended the Simbang Gabi at the Capitol grounds which started last December 15.

It can be recalled that the Catholic tradition at the Capitol was introduced by the previous administration of then governor and now 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr. and now being continued by his son, Gov. Amado I. Espino III, who religiously attends the mass together with his wife, First Lady Karina P. Espino and his son, Amado IV.

Held every 5 o’clock in the afternoon, the anticipated Simbang Gabi is sponsored by the different offices of the provincial government to include all 14 government hospitals and different schools as well.

Aside from this, a Midnight Mass (Nativity of the Lord) which will be conducted in anticipation of Christmas Day is set on December 24 (Sunday) in the same venue at 7PM. On the other hand, a New Year’s Eve Mass (Mass for Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God) is scheduled on December 31 at exactly 7 in the evening.

Among the regular attendees of the mass are Congressman Espino and his wife, former First Lady Prescilla I. Espino.

Meanwhile, mass-goers are amazed and awed at the sights of the Capitol Plaza with the Belen or Nativity scene serving as the centerpiece of attraction along with the giant Christmas tree.

With the Capitol building as the backdrop, mass-goers and visitors never fail to grab the opportunity to take pictures with their kith and kin. (Ruby R. Bernardino)
