Common terminal soon to rise in Dagupan
THE Dagupan City Council has endorsed the establishment of a common terminal on Jose R. de Venecia Expressway Extension in Barangay Tapuac here, away from the crowded central business district of the city.
Councilor Luis Samson Jr. said on Tuesday it is consistent with a previous ordinance he sponsored in the city council seeking the establishment of a common terminal for all public utility vehicles entering the city, noting the obstruction of flow of traffic caused by buses, mini-buses, vans and jeepneys entering and exiting from their terminals.
He explained in an interview that it is also in line with the ultimatum given to all buses, mini-buses and passenger vans to vacate their terminals in the downtown area of Dagupan by the end of December this year.
All the existing terminals, he said, are violating a standing city ordinance enacted way back in 1977 prohibiting terminals whose ingress and egress are located within 100 meters of a street intersection.
That ordinance was recently amended by the SP prohibiting terminals whose ingress and egress are located within 200 meters of a street intersection.
In this regard, SP gave Servillano P. Dayo of SDP Corporation the go-signal to build a common terminal on its more than six-hectare property.
However, the pinpointed location of the common terminal still needs to be converted from agricultural to non-agricultural. The area is part of the unproductive fishponds east side of JDV Expressway Extension.
The application of another proponent for a common bus terminal by Dr. Abraham Coquia was rejected because his proposed area is located in the south-end of Arellano Street which is near a street intersection and the Dawel Bridge, Samson said.
The proposed common terminal to be built by SDP Corp. must conform with all the standard regulations to be prescribed by LGU Dagupan that must include facilities for the convenience and comforts of passengers, Samson added.
Meanwhile, the SP is also considering to request the Land Transportation and Franchising Board (LTFRB) to open lines for a fleet of jeepneys and mini-buses to pass through JDV Expressway Extension. (Leonardo Micua)
