Anti-criminality campaign nets 10K firearms, 442 arrests
PNP OPLANS ‘BOGA’, ‘SITA’, ‘BAKAL’
AN intensive campaign against criminality in the province that was implemented to support the war on drugs has resulted in the confiscation of 10,457 unlicensed firearms and filing of charges against gun owners.
P/ Chief Inspector Norman Florentino, public information officer of Pangasinan Police Provincial Police Office (PPPO,) said ‘Operation Boga’, ‘Oplan Sita’ and ‘Oplan Bakal’ were launched in August 2016 to November 2017 in compliance with the directive of PNP national headquarters to recover and inventory all firearms with expired licenses and unregistered firearms from gun holders including organic police.
Florentino said there are a total of 40,143 listed firearms in Pangasinan, out of that number, 25,145 were renewed, 14,998 lapsed.
Together with unlicensed firearms, Oplan Boga conducted 528 operations in Pangasinan that resulted in the confiscation of 10,157 firearms whose licenses were not renewed, out of which 496 were high powered and 40 were explosives, and the arrest of 442 persons as of August 2017.
PPO continues to remind gun owners through the ‘Oplan Katok (house visits of local police renew their licenses to own and possess firearms (LTOPF) and to register the firearms or surrender the firearms for safekeeping to the local police stations, Florentino said. (Nora Dominguez)
