Worsening traffic in Manaoag, a bane and a boon
MANAOAG—The municipal government here is constructing a park and parking space in front of the town hall and a three-storey building at the back.
Mayor Kim Mikael Amador said P10 million sourced from local funds’ savings are being used for the construction.
He said the parking area can accommodate 30 vehicles and is expected to minimize volume of double parking of vehicles in their town.
The three-storey building will house the Sangguniang Bayan, One-Stop Shop and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
He said daily heavy traffic along Manaoag’s main roads is already inevitable because of the increasing influx of devotees and pilgrims to Our Lady of the Rosary Shrine ever since it was declared by the Pope as a Basilica.
Amador said Manaoag is faced with the dilemma of having narrow roads to serve heavy volume of vehicles.
“The influx of people here is unstoppable,” he said but he is not complaining about the worsening traffic because big crowds are beneficial to local folks’ livelihood.
While others see traffic congestion as a problem, he said he sees it as an opportunity for the people to earn, especially vendors, the mayor told students of St. Camillus College of Manaoag during a Leadership forum last week.
Amador said he has built a tricycle terminal behind the central school yet traffic problem remains so the local government is looking for a lot to be used as bus, jeep or van terminal.
Manaoag, he said, is a small town formed during the Spanish regime in 1600s.
