San Fabian chess wizard kid wins

7TH PANGASINAN AGE GROUP CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

LINGAYEN — Young chess wizard Dennis Gutierrez III notched the top slot in the 14-and-under category of the 7th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship held on October 7 and 8 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center (PTDC).

Gutierrez, a product of chess clinics who hails from San Fabian town, humbled his foes on the checkered board and won P3,000, plus a trophy and certificate.

Meanwhile, John Jasper Laxamana of Angeles, Pampanga reigned supreme in the 20-and-under category.

Laxamana, a student of Far Eastern University in Manila and a consistent participant of the annual chess tournament, won P6,000 plus a trophy and certificate.

Sports Director Modesto Operania said this year’s event had 500 participants, the biggest number since the project was introduced as a regular chess event seven years ago.

He said past tournaments registered an average of 200 -300.

Other winners from Pangasinan were: 18 and under- Brylle Gever Vinluan, 3rd, (San Fabian); 14 and under- Sidney Moniko Plastina, 4th (Asingan). 10 and under- Mark Jovan Ventayen, 3rd (Lingayen) 8 and under- Archaeon Bautista, 3rd (Binmaley).

Two more tournaments: the 6th Pangasinan Chess Championships and the 8th Governor Amado Espino Cup Open Chess Tournament will be held on December. (PIO/RRB)
