POULTRY raisers seriously affected by reports of avian influenza last month are beginning to recover from their losses.

This was confirmed by Rosendo So, chairman of Samahan ng Industriyang Agrikultura (SINAG) during the KBP Forum Pangasinan chapter last Thursday.

But he said there is a glut of oversized chicken in cold storage that were not immediately sold following a temporary scare brought by the avian influenza nationwide.

There was abundant supply of 1.6 to 1.8 kilos each of chicken instead of the one kilo each normally raised in 28 days, he said. Those that weighed up to 1.8 kilos are grown up to 45 days, he added.

He said those displayed in public markets are one-kilo chicken.

Live weight of chicken went as low as P32 a kilo at the height of the bird flu outbreak in poultry farms in Pampanga, So said.

“The price has recovered now,” he said.

However, due to hard times, he said, the buying capacity of people, especially farmers, is still low.

So added that about P26-billion was lost across the country due to the avian influenza outbreak. (Eva Visperas)
