OWING TO PARENTS’ NEGLIGENCE

LINGAYEN—Since January to date, some 7,333 Pangasinenses already suffered from acute gastroenteritis (AGE) while 41 others died from it.

According to the Provincial Health Office, the AGE surveillance report as of Sept. 4 showed the number of those who suffered from it is 12 percent higher than last year’s record of the same period which was 6,530, and there were 39 deaths.

Consequently, PHO placed the following under AGE watch list because of high cases: San Carlos City with 699 cases, Calasiao (510), Malasiqui (427), Bayambang (379), Sta. Barbara (321), Lingayen (319), Mangaldan (307), Bolinao (299), San Fabian (260) and Binmaley (253).

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Anna de Guzman said the usual culprits are water-borne insects and unsanitary food preparations.

De Guzman noted negligence of parents when children one-year-old to four years old suffer from diarrhea.

Data showed males aged from less than one-year-old to four years old had 2,088 cases while females of the same age bracket had 1,571 cases.

Other cases of negligence that resulted in AGE is failure to thoroughly clean infants’ feeding bottles, or allowing flies to land on feeding bottles or improper preparation of formula milk, she added.

The casualties this year due to AGE came from the following: one each in Bani, Aguilar, Mangatarem, Binmaley, Mapandan, San Jacinto, Bautista, Basista, Pozorrubio, San Manuel, Rosales; two each in Bolinao, Lingayen and Urbiztondo; three each in Mangaldan and San Carlos City; four each in Bugallon, San Fabian and Umingan while Dagupan City had six.
