LNU Dukes thump PCST Topnotch

THE Lyceum Northwestern University showed its supremacy anew in the province tertiary school caging by thumping co-title contender and arch-foe Philippine College of Science and Technology, 66-60, in the low-scoring last game of the qualifying round of the Cordillera Higher Education Schools Athletic Association Basketball League.
Down by four points in the first period, 14-18, the 2016 UCAAP champions LNU Dukes recovered their composure in the second quarter when its reliable-marquee player Binmaley-pride Roxar Melendez led the blitz in rebound and scored seven points of his total 16.
Melendez’s efforts enabled Dukes to grab the front by six marks, 33-27, in the first half.
The Dukes, mentored by Nanoy Duque and Gilmark Meneses, widened the gap to eight at the third, 50-42, and led by 20 points, 64-44, halfway of the fourth and final period with Roxar’s brother, Mark, orchestrating the 14-2 surge with three treys.
Topnotch managed to counter with 16-2 romp, but were not enough to outscore their opponent and succumbed by six points.
Mark contributed 11 points while Evin Coquia added 10 for the Dukes. Ismael Sarmiento scored 16 while Philip Medina had 11 for the losers.
Dukes earned the twice-to-beat advantage to face fourth finisher Don Mariano Marcos State University while second placer University of Luzon Golden Tigers who earned the twice-to-beat incentive collide with third finisher, the 2017 PRISAA champions PCST Topnotch, in the double-header semifinal matches on September 26 at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.
