TO HELP POULTRY INDUSTRY

ROSALES—The president of Samahang Industriya at Agrikultura (Sinag) urged the public, especially the netizens, to use the power of the social media to allay bird flu scare among chicken and egg lovers by posting their pictures online while eating these chicken.

Rosendo So said public awareness would greatly help to regain confidence of chicken meat and egg consumers as the poultry industry had suffered tremendous losses following the avian influenza outbreak in San Luis, Pampanga.

“Sobra-sobra na ang supply natin ngayon kasi kokonti na ang kumakain,” So said. He added people should know it is safe to eat chicken and poultry products because government already managed to control the outbreak.

He added that various local government units should do their share in softening the impact of avian flu outbreak resulting in a scare of poultry products by conducting massive information dissemination campaign.

“Dapat ang LGU ipakita sa Facebook at iba pang social media na kumakain sila ng chicken para ang mga tao makita na wala palang problema,” he said.

He added that the impact on sales of poultry products is aggravated by the lean months season.

So said when they met on Wednesday in a restaurant, they ordered chicken, eggs, including balut to show the public there’s nothing to worry about the outbreak as it is confined only in San Luis, Pampanga and the areas affected have been placed under quarantine.

“It must be disseminated to the people that the avian influenza in the Philippines does not affect humans while strain of bird flu in other countries are contagious.

So earlier said the government “over reacted” in dealing with the avian influenza outbreak in San Luis, Pampanga that resulted in public scare for chicken meat and eggs products.

“Everybody panicked. The announcement was wrong,” he said.

So said when a piggery farm in Manaoag town was also hit by Ebola virus years ago the farm was quickly placed under quarantine “but there was no overreacting”.

The SINAG chair said the poultry industry could overcome this problem “but it depends on the handling of government”. (Eva C. Visperas)
