The CCTV, a life changer

THANKS to technology, criminals now have more difficulty hiding their crimes and getting away with them.

Not a few crimes have been solved because perpetrators have been identified by CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) in strategic places not only by government but by private establishments and homes.

The recent public uproar over the death of Grade 9 student Kian de los Santos in Caloocan City was triggered mainly by clips of CCTV shown on public television. If there had not been a CCTV footage on the events that led to his death in the hands of arresting law enforcers, the incident would have been merely accepted as another item added to national statistics.

Given the effectiveness of CCTV in people’s lives for protection, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan should consider adopting an ordinance that will require towns and cities to install installation of CCTV cameras and system in their town/city halls, public areas, schools, main roads and barangays and to allocate funds for these.

In turn, towns and cities should adopt an ordinance requiring malls, shopping establishments, recreation centers, hotels restaurants, banks, private schools and colleges to install CCTV cameras in the same manner that these are required to keep fire extinguishers in their premises.

This technology not only will save lives and properties but will help solve many crimes committed against persons and properties.

Change has come

WHO said President Duterte is insensitive to public criticism?  Think again,

In a 360-degree turn, Mr. Duterte vented his ire on the police over the outpouring of cries that police abuse had reportedly resulted in the death of Kian de los Santos of Caloocan City. Before the shooting, Kian was picked up by police as CCTV footage showed. Not long after, Kian’s body was found slumped in muddy waters—face down.  As subsequent autopsy showed, he had two gunshot wounds at the back of his head.  A third bullet entered through his ear.

Quiet at the start, Mr. Duterte soon blew his top on watching the CTV footage himself and became obvious that Kian’s killing was a botched police job.

In a rare show of anger aimed at the police, the Chief Executive ordered the suspects prosecuted immediately and, if found guilty, “throw them in jail.”  Obviously, change has come.
