FIRST DRUG-CLEARED CITY

DECLARING Alaminos City as drug-cleared was the easy part, sustaining it is a bigger challenge.

This is the view of P/Superintendent Benjamin Ariola, city police chief, of the city’s status in the war on drugs and to sustain the achievement is a much bigger challenge for both the police and the city government.

Based on the parameter established by Philippine Drug Agency Authority, a town or city has to wait for two months before it can declared drug-free and such was the case with Alaminos City.

However, Ariola said two weeks after the declaration of drug cleared, the city police apprehended a drug dependent who was later found positive of drugs.

The suspect is now undergoing drug rehabilitation at the Region 1Medical Center’s rehabilitation facility.

To sustain that Alaminos’s status, the city government and the Alaminos City Police Station agreed to pursue and simultaneously launch ‘Project ART’ (Anti-Drug Campaign, Rehabilitation and Reformation of drug surrenderers and Transformation of drug cleared barangays) and ‘Project ISLA’ (Isang daang pulo, Sagipin Laban sa Abuso) in order to accomplish effective demand reduction.

The police will also launch ‘Project Zero’, P100,000 reward to the cleanest and most peaceful barangay from the mayor.

Meanwhile, Ariola said his station continues to focus on rape, murder, homicide, and robbery.

Based on the latest crime statistics in the city, Ariola said a 52% decrease in crime rate is noted compared to last year. (Nora Dominguez)
