3 NPA rebels die in encounter with PNP
SAN NICOLAS — Three members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) were killed when they clashed with joint elements of the police led by the Provincial Public Safety Company in San Nicolas town at 5:20 p.m. Friday.
A text message from Chief Inspector Norman Florentino, public information of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO), said the encounter happened in the areas between barangays Malico and Sta. Maria in San Nicolas.
This was the same area where elements of the Regional Public Safety Battalion 1 (RPSB 1) and NPA rebels clashed in the morning of July 28 where one RPSB 1 member, PO2 Aries Tamondong of Manaoag, was the lone fatality.
Recovered from the scene of the encounter were an improvised explosive devise or land mine, 36 meters of trip wires, ignition switch, one .9 mm pistol submachine gun, a rifle grenade, two assorted ammunition and magazines.
There was no casualty reported on the government side.
Florentino said elements of the PPSC, RPSB1, Regional Intelligence Group and the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office and other units were conducting clearing operations when the encounter happened.
At presstime, hot pursuit operations by the police for the other rebels are ongoing while making lateral coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The NPA rebels were believed to be part of the same group that elements of the RPSB 1 clashed on July 28 and are believed to be planning another surprise attack on government troops and installations. (Leonardo Micua)
