Sto. Tomas strictly enforces smoking ban

NO-DRUGS, NO-SMOKING TOWN

ASIDE from being the lone drug-unaffected town in Pangasinan, this municipality has already been a zero-smoking zone from the day President Duterte signed Executive Order 26 two months ago.

Mayor Timoteo Villar III said to demonstrate the town’s strong support to the president’s administration, he and the rest of the town and barangay officials immediately held series of meetings with the people about the nationwide smoking ban the President wants to implement.

“The people here are in unison that such order must be strictly implemented for health and financial reasons,” Villar said.

Smoking has also been banned in schools.

He added that vendors even signed a manifesto stopping the sale of cigarettes in their town after their meeting on May 29 in the barangays involving cigarette vendors where they read Executive Order 26 particularly Section 3, paragraphs f, g and h on the prohibited acts of selling and displaying cigarettes.

“I heard reports that former residents in our town who are already living in another place would consume their cigarettes first somewhere else before entering the town,” he said.

He added smokers in the town travel to nearby towns to smoke.

“We have no difficulty implementing smoking ban here because people of Sto. Tomas, Pangasinan are known to be united and cooperative for as long as it redounds to their welfare,” Villar said.

He said that since their town was known as the lone drug unaffected town, a distinction it holds solely in Pangasinan, since the time of then Mayor Antonio Villar Jr decades ago. (Tita Roces)
