DPWH rejects Urdaneta-Manaoag road as national road

DEPARTMENT of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar denied the request of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) to convert the Urdaneta -Manaoag Road into a national road.

In his letter to Governor Amado Espino III, Villar said the road section of Urdaneta-Manaoag did not conform with any of the DPWH Functional Classification criteria for a national road.

The road section serves only as a collector road of the existing Mangaldan-Manaoag-Binalonan road and Manila North Road that serves only local traffic and does not perform a national function.

Although it leads to a tourist destination, the Department of Tourism has not accredited tourist service centers within the subject road section.

The survey conducted by representatives of the DPWH and the 2nd District Engineering Office showed that the road does not qualify to become a national road.

The SP proposed the conversion of Urdaneta-Manaoag road as national road to further improve the roads using funds from the national government. (Nora Dominguez)
