Junk foods banned in public schools

OFFICIALS and teachers at the Pangasinan School Division 1 appealed to the pupils’ parents to support the campaign discouraging the buying and consumption of junk foods.

Dr. Maria Celia Junio Fernandez, Schools Division Superintendent, asked the parents to help discipline their children against buying junk foods especially inside and outside school campus.

“We need the help of our parents because while we can help control the situation inside the campus by prohibiting the sale of junk foods, there are ambulant vendors outside the school that the children are exposed to,” Fernandez said.

All schools in the division have already banned the sale of soft drinks, candies and other junk foods inside school canteens. The only food items allowed to be sold are bread, biscuits, boiled corn and banana, soup, arroz caldo and fruits.

Teacher Caroline Terrado, in charge in the school canteen at the Lingayen 1 Central School, said she received the directive last Monday from the Division 1 office disallowing sale of all junk foods in the canteens.

“The pupils naturally complained but this is for their own good, for their health,” she said.

Fernandez said while they are in control inside the school premises, there is nothing they can do about the ambulant vendors who are selling junk foods.

“We have called on barangay officials to support our campaign by restricting items that can be sold outside the school.

The division already formed a monitoring team to ensure full compliance of all schools with the directive.

Barangay Chairman Rolando Terrado of Maniboc Lingayen said he already discussed the campaign with the ambulant vendors selling outside Lingayen 1 Central School and were given two weeks to vacate the area fronting the L1CS.  (Nora Dominguez)
