Dagupan’s best at 70!

DAGUPENOS are in for a year of celebration mood, thanks to the preparation of the city government to celebrate the Dagupan’s 70th year Foundation as a city.

The celebration was off to an impressive start with the Pinablin Dagupenõs Awards, recognizing the achievements of outstanding ladies and gentlemen of the city, they who not only distinguished themselves in their respective calling but more importantly projected the values and integrity of Dagupeños to the nation and to the world.

The selection of Dr. Eliza Fernandez Ramos (Medicine), Dr. Gregoria P. Villaflor (Medicine), Dolores Cerezo (Education), Dr. Francisco T. Duque III (Public Administration), lawyer Liberato C. Reyna Jr. (Public Service), Westly R. Rosario (Science/Technology), Restituto Basa (Heritage), Wilfredo D. Lomibao (Mass Media), and Dr. Vicky S. Tada (Business and Entrepreneurship) as Pinablin Dagupeños are worthy.

Special awards by executive order from Mayor Belen to former Speaker of the House Jose De Venecia Jr., Atty. Gonzalo T. Duque, Dr. Aurora S. Reyna and retired Regional Trial Court Judge Alicia G. Decano, were definitely well-deserved if not long overdue.

Mabuhay Dagupan City!

Good martial law

PRESIDENT Marcos declared martial law in 1972 to imprison all those who opposed his policies.  Among the hundreds he had thrown behind bars were nationalists Jose Diokno, Joaquin Roces and Ninoy Aquino, and many student activists and freedom fighters from the academe.  He also closed down all newspapers and TV stations critical of him, like the Manila Times, Philippines Herald and Manila Chronicle, and ABS-CBN, ABC 5 and GMA 7.  The only major daily that he didn’t clamp down was the Manila Bulletin.  That’s because the owner of Manila Bulletin was Gen. Hans Menzi, Mr. Marcos’ aide de camp.

Now fast forward to 2017: President Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao in a bid to contain and stifle evil attempts by Islamic terrorists led by the Mautes to burn Marawi City.

In declaring martial law, did Mr. Duterte order the arrest of even a single political foe of his?  No.  Did he close even a single newspaper, or TV network?  No.  Did we hear someone going underground for fear of political persecution?  No.

So what’s all this fuss about martial law creating havoc to the country?

Such misplaced logic — sort of.
