IN observance of the Kidney Prevention Month this month, the City Health Office (CHO) will conduct an educational campaign in all public schools to create awareness on the prevention of kidney disease.
Kidney disease is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the city and in the country, said Dr. Doris Jovellanos of the CHO.
The CHO will conduct a case-finding activity and will collect urine from school children to check if they have kidney problems.
“Mayor Belen Fernandez would like to make an early detection so we could properly manage the disease in our city, especially among women,” said Jovellanos.
Jovellanos said that most women are vulnerable to contracting urinary tract infections due to the anatomy of a woman, her urethra is shorter than that of the male.
“If the urethra is shorter, microbes travel upward faster and that leads to UTI,” said Jovellanos.
She is encouraging adults to drink from eight to 10 glasses of water daily and for kids, six to eight glasses of water daily, to prevent kidney disease.
She also advised the public to observe personal hygiene, refrain from too much salt intake and maintain a good eating habit.
In taking medicines especially pain relievers; patients should avoid taking antibiotics without prescription from doctors. (Joseph C. Bacani)
