FOR security reasons, no one will be allowed to carry or bring backpacks inside the Bangusan Street Party of the 2017 Bangus Festival on today, April 30.

P/Superintendent Franklin Ortiz, officer-in-charge at the Dagupan City Police Station said the carrying of backpacks and bottles of soft drinks into the Bangusan Street Party will be banned for the duration of the street party as a precautionary measure.

He said backpacks can be used by terrorists to hide an improvised explosive device (IED) and detonate it to harm and even kill revelers.

The Bangusan Street party, which is expected to draw up to one million revelers, will be staged along the entire four-kilometer stretch of the Jose de Venecia Expressway.

More than 20 live bands from Manila and other parts of the country are set to perform during the Bangusan Street Party.

Epee Rafanan, executive committee chairman, said the carnival, food court and flea market are positioned on a vacant lot along the De Venecia Expressway.

In this event, establishments and families that bought iron grills and five kilos of milkfish from organizers are expected to prepare meals and snacks for the duration of the street party till early morning the following day.

In 2010, during the administration of then Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., with Belen Fernandez as vice mayor and executive chair of the Bangus Festival, the Bangusan Street Party was adjudged as the Biggest Street Party in the Philippines.

Expecting a much bigger crowd at the Bangusan Street Party, Ortiz requested augmentation forces from the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office to beef up members of the Dagupan Police to help secure the street party. (Leonardo Micua)
