Pandan Festival clinches second win

THE Pandan Festival of Mapandan town, made an impressive comeback appearance at the Festivals of the North (FON) of the ongoing 2017 Dagupan Bangus by emerging the champion anew.

Pandan Festival bagged the P400,000 grand prize by edging out the Bangus Festival in the colorful 2017 edition of the FON witnessed by thousands of people who patiently lined the streets and packed the city plaza till late evening of April 28.

The Pandan Festival dancers, garbed in pandan motif costumes, were easily the crowd’s favorites as they won all three major prizes: “Best in Costume”, “Best in Props” and “Best in Streetdancing” to wrest the crown from perennial winner, host Dagupan Bangus Festival.

Pandan Festival won in the first edition of the FON in 2008 and had not joined since.

The Bangus Festival streeetdancers, who won the “Gilon-Gilon ed Baley” street dancing contest among the locals in Dagupan last April 21, was adjudged first runner-up to win the P200,000 cash prize.

The Tinugbo Festival streetdancers of Pugo, La Union earned P80,000 for their third finish while the Basi Festival of Naguilian, La Union went home with P60,000 for their fourth place.

The fifth place winners was the Dinamulag Mango Festival of Masinloc, Zambales and pocketed P50,000.

Declared co-fifth placers were the streetdancers from the Pamulinawen Festival of Laoag, Ilocos Norte, the Halamanan Festival of Guiguinto, Bulacan; and Talong Festival of Villasis, Pangasinan, who were awarded P50,000 each.

Mayor Belen Fernandez, the initiator of FON since she was still the vice mayor of Dagupan, and City Councilor Maybelyn de la Cruz-Fernandez, announced the winners submitted by a panel of judges from National Culture and the Arts. (Leonardo Micua)
