MAYOR Belen Fernandez said the city government will provide the rice to all volunteers mobilized by barangay chairmen in clearing esteros in the city.

Fernandez said the clearing of esteros, which is being done yearly before the big rains set in, will reduce the threat of flood in various barangays of the city.

City Administrator Farah Decano said the estero cleaning begins in the central business district to help minimize flooding in the district.

Under the program, volunteers will not be paid cash but will be provided rice by the city government.

This will complement various flood mitigating measures being continuously undertaken by the city government, like the non-stop dredging of shallow rivers, elevation of low-lying streets and construction of flood control dikes on both banks of the Pantal River.

The Department of Public Works and Highways has lent its three dredging machines and personnel to Dagupan to help dredge the shallow Calmay River.

Meanwhile, several roads and streets have already been elevated to minimize risks of residents having to walk through floodwaters whether to school or to work during the rainy season.

Mayor Fernandez lauded former Rep. Gina de Venecia for helping build protective dikes along the Pantal River in several southern barangays, an initiative being continued by her son, Rep. Christopher de Venecia.

At the same time, the clearing of illegal fish pens and river debris by the Task Force Bantay Ilog is continuing.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod earlier passed a resolution calling the clearing of esteros.
