FORMER House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. said the recently-concluded ASEAN Summit hosted by the Philippines has provided the impetus for an Asia-wide support for President Duterte’s anti-drug campaign in the Philippines.

De Venecia told local newsmen on April 30 (during the Bangus Festival’s Kalutan ed Dalan) in Dagupan City that the drug problem in the Philippines is not only an Asia-wide problem but a global problem.

“It’s not even just a Philippine problem,” he said.

He said he is proposing the holding of a global anti-narcotic summit to be held either in Manila or Mexico City even as he called on the European Union to stop criticizing President Duterte’s drug campaign.

“We need help instead of being criticized,” he said.

De Venecia pointed out, “We should work with the UN, the US, the ASEAN, SARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) led by India and Pakistan for ASEAN to neutralize the Southeast Asian drug network along the banks of Mekong river that includes Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and parts of Cambodia .”

He added, “And at the same time, get SARC to clamp down as well on the massive growing of opium by the drug lords of Afghanistan.” (Tita Roces)
