THE city’s biggest summer sports clinic was a resounding success with completion of the program of 640 children enrolled in 11 sports events from May 5 to 26.
The 22-day summer sports clinic dubbed as Sports Kontra Droga was facilitated by the Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC).
It was offered free to children aged 5 to 16 years under the Building The Future: Developing Our Excellence in Sports or BTF DOES program launched by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

DCSC Commissioner Finnela T. Sim said initially there were 853 children who enrolled under the program but this was trimmed down to 640.
The 640 children completed the training.
Most of the five years old participants showed interest in gymnastics while most of the 16 years old children enrolled in archery and wushu.
Out of the 640, at least 280 attended swimming lessons, 102 joined the badminton event and 95 trained in chess.
Swimming has been the city’s biggest medal hauler in the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA), the Palarong Pambansa and in the Batang Pinoy National Championships since Mayor Belen started with the BTF DOES It program.
Under the program, the city trained 6,000 school children to learn how to swim to provide them the skills which they can make use to save themselves and their families from drowning given that the city is always flooded during rainy season.
One the most decorated swimmers of the city who even broke three national records is Janelle Alisa Frances Lin.
As member of the Balon Dagupan swimming team, Lin is training daily for two to three hours at the city’s newly renovated poolside.
Her determination paid off when she started reaping gold medals in the R1AA, Palarong Pambansa and the Batang Pinoy National Championships.
She broke the 2012 national record of Erin Castrillo of Manila in 200M Individual Medley of 2:38.25 by setting a new national record of 2:35.87.
She also broke the 2012 national record of Marie Olegario of San Juan in 200-M Backstroke of 2:39.22 with a new national record of 2:35.19.
Janelle also wiped out the 2015 national record of Aubrey Bermejo of Iligan City in 200-M Freestyle of 2:20.52 by setting a new national record of 2:18.17. Bermejo just broke the 14-year record of that event last year.
Education Program Supervisor Marissa O. Perez, in charge of sports of the City Schools Division, disclosed that Lin was the city’s first athlete to win gold medals in the Palarong Pambansa. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
