City schools see higher enrollment this year

SCHOOL teachers in Dagupan have started doing the rounds of communities doing their version of Oplan “Tokhang” in order to encourage children of school age who have not registered for this school year.

Venus Estolino, chief of the Curriculum Implementation Division of the City Schools Division, told the KBP Forum last week that the activity is part of the ‘Balik Eskwela’ program of the Department of Education (DepEd), following the end of ‘Brigada Eskwela’.

She said the enrollment this year will surely increase compared to the decline in numbers in 2016.

She explained the decline could be due to the transfer of pupils to private schools or that they dropped out of school for one reason or another.

The teachers, she said, have been going door-to-door to reach out to every child and their parents and prompt the registration of their children.

June 5 is the start of classes in all public schools throughout the country.

This school year, Estolino expects enrolment in public schools in Dagupan to be a little higher as the enrollment in 2016 dipped by less than a hundred over that of 2015.

She said under “Tokhang”, teachers will specifically look for the drop outs and convince them to go back to school and finish their studies up to Grade VI and then to senior high school. (Leonardo Micua)
