Locals mix it up in boxing, beach volleyball

LINGAYEN – Paboksing ed Gulpo and Beach Volleybelles competition will be where intense sports action will take place during the Pista’y Dayat celebration.

Now on its 8th year, the boxing bouts will be held on April 28 at the back of the Urduja House while the beach volleyball tournament is set on April 30 and May 1 at the Capitol beachfront.

Provincial Sports Consultant Modesto Operania expressed optimism that the staging of the two events will encourage locals to develop more interest in honing their skills in boxing and volleyball.

“The sporting events will be opportunities for local players to showcase their potentials in the two sports before sports executives of Manila and Baguio-based universities and colleges who are scouting for talents to join their varsity teams,” Operania said.

He said many homegrown sports talents are presently making waves in many prestigious universities and colleges in Manila.

The boxing tournament will have 30 Pacquiao wannabes battling for supremacy in 15 weight divisions.

The beach volleyball competition, jointly sponsored by the provincial government and 2nd District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil, will see Metro-Manila based and local college students in action vying for the championship trophy.

The beach volleyball tourney starts on April 30 (8 a.m. onwards) for its elimination games. The semi-finals will he held on May 1, 8 a.m., and the championship round is set at 3 p.m.

Other sporting events scheduled include: Airsoft Competition and Military Simulation Games to be held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center and Pangasinan National High School, April 22-23; Pangasinan Golf Tournament at the Bonuan Beach Club in Dagupan City, April 23; and the 1st Urduja Cup Invitational Shootfest on April 29 to May 1 at the Pangasinan PNP grounds.  (PIO/MGNO)
