Sto. Tomas set to break 2 records anew with corn

STO. TOMAS—Glutinous corn, the town’s major product, will take center stage again when it makes its bid for Guinness World Record for the Longest Line of Picnic on April 2.
In 2008, the townsfolk used glutinous corn when they clinched the Longest Barbecue crown by simultaneously grilling 93, 540 glutinous corn ears along the 3,803.96 meters long interconnected barbecue grills set up in the main road stretch of the town.
Corn is the town’s One Town, One Product here. A replica of a giant corn was erected fronting the town municipal hall to remind the people about their successful Guinness World Records title they earned in 2008 for Longest Barbecue.
On April 2, they will use about 4,000 newly harvested glutinous corn ears to be mixed with the Adobong Sto. Tomas con maiz, an original town recipe for the food that 20,000 would partake for their April 2 historic Guinness’ Longest Picnic Line title attempt.
To complete the recipe, the townsfolk will prepare 3,600 kilos of raw meat (pork) and 3,600 kilos of mixed vegetables for their Adobong Sto. Tomas Con Maiz to be served a la boodle fight for the Longest Picnic Line bid.
It will take place at precisely 4:00 p.m.
Cris Balila, the municipal agriculturist, told The PUNCH the town has 498 hectares planted to white and yellow corn and about 600 farmers are involved in corn farming here.
The Sto. Tomas government provides 77% fertilizer subsidy to its farmers. A town’s farmer only pays P200 for a P900 worth of fertilizers.
Balila said the saved money could be used by farmers to buy other farm inputs.
Corn farming is also supported by efficient irrigation through water pumps, shallow tube wells provided by the municipal, provincial and national governments.
Simultaneously with the longest line of picnic bid, this town will also bid for Guinness’ title for Longest line of Tables on April 2 by setting up six-kilometer long interconnected tables. (Eva Visperas)
