LINGAYEN—The provincial government wants April 5 declared Pangasinan Day by Congress.

Last week, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan sent its endorsement of the bill filed in the House of Representatives by Second District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil seeking to declare April 5 of every year as Pangasinan Day and a special non-working public holiday in Pangasinan.

April 5 was the date in year 1580 or 437 years ago when Pangasinan was founded as one of the first administrative provinces in the Philippines declared by the colonizers in the name of the Spanish crown.

This year, Malacanang already declared April 5 as a special non-working holiday in Pangasinan upon the request of the provincial government headed by Gov. Amado Espino III, but only for this year.

The resolution authored by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim acknowledged that House Bill No. 2749 is a significant measure as it would complement the objective of Provincial Ordinance No. 143-2010 adopted by the SP on Feb. 15, 2010, declaring and citing April 5, 1580 as the Official Foundation Day of Pangasinan.

In 2010, a special research committee created by the SP, headed by former Vice Gov. Gonzalo Duque, determined from the national archives  in Manila and in Spain that the province of Pangasinan was founded on April 5, 1580.

Copies of the resolution will be sent to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Congresswoman Marlyn Agabas-Primicias, chairperson of the committee in the revision of laws; Atty. Ma. Cristina Anillo-Jacinto, committee secretary; and Congressmen Bataoil and Amado Espino Jr., of the fifth district of Pangasinan for their information and guidelines. (Leonardo Micua)
