NATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH

LINGAYEN— Those who say Pangasinan’s policewomen are unattractive and unglamorous and irrelevant should take a good look.

The ladies in the police force took time out last week to prove to the public they serve that they have their own share of charm, beauty, talent and poise and more and hold their own in a beauty pageant for “Gandang Pulis” to mark the Women’s Month celebration on March 14.

The ‘Ms. EVA’ competition, the first such beauty contest held exclusively for Pangasinan policewomen, was participated in by beauteous policewomen from the 44 towns and four city police stations of the Pangasinan Police Office.

Take Police Officer 1 (PO1) Sheila Sandoval, 27, the statuesque policewoman from the Pozorrubio Police Station, wowed the crowd to win the Ms. EVA (Empowerment of Women against Violence and Abuse) crown.

The 5’7” Sandoval, a registered nurse, said she was initially hesitant to join the pageant as she felt she did not possess a figure for beauty contest.

But after winning the title and three other awards (Best in Talent, Best in Casual Wear and Best in Sports Wear), she felt relieved to find out that the contest was not only about physical attributes but about “the heart and confidence. Internal beauty which are more important.”

Sandoval became an instant media celebrity two weeks ago when she assisted her fellow policewoman who gave birth inside a moving vehicle, her police chief’s private vehicle, while en route to a hospital in La Union.

She and PO1 Liezel Lorenzana were also given awards for their role in that situation.  Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Caridad Galvez presented the awards.

First runner-up was PO1 Jeanne Cayabyab of the Dagupan City Police Station while PO1 Debbie Malit assigned at the Pangasinan Police Office, took second runner-up honors.

Other policewomen who joined the contest were PO2 Auria Vidal of Alaminos City Police Station, PO2 Melanie Bacani of Basista Police Station, PO2 Vina de Leon of Bayambang Police Station and Po1 Joanna Marie Badua of Provincial Public Safety Company.

P/Senior Superintendent Ronald Lee, acting police director, cited the policewomen for their important roles in their respective police stations, particularly handling sensitive cases involving women and children.

“They are as important as their male counterparts in the police service,” he said.

The policewomen also staged a sportsfest and cheering competition.

The Pangasinan Police Provincial Office also cited policewomen who have shown exemplary performance in their duties and responsibilities as police officers. (Tita Roces)
