When the cat is away….

LOCAL residents fear that the still unaccounted for notorious drug pushers understandably fear that the old adage “When the cat is away, the mouse will play!” will soon rule the day.

Not a few local communities were both saddened and assured about the decision of President Duterte to order the PNP to stand down in the war on drugs. They are sad because it’d appear that the momentum giving the drug personalities the chase that was long overdue would be lost overnight, knowing how criminals exploit gaps in law enforcement.

At the same time, Pangasinenses support the decision to keep PNP focused on cleansing its ranks of scalawags. Truth be told, many have encountered corrupt and inept cops in their daily activities, whether on the road, community block or even inside police stations. That the police have not succeeded in preventing ‘vigilante’ killing and deaths of innocent citizens in police operations added to the public’s uneasiness about our police. The only redeeming image is knowing that the drug pushers and users are on the run because the police are finally breathing down their necks.

But now that our police have been pulled back from the war o drugs, should Pangasinenses feel vulnerable again?

A higher visibility of policemen in neighborhoods especially at night will do good in sending the message that the cat has not left.

Welcome move

GOOD move. By temporarily halting the anti-illegal drug operations, President Duterte proved he could also listen to public opinion. Stubborn he is not. He has this stern-looking face from Day One. But that is just a façade to camouflage a marshmallow heart of his. Without a doubt, the drug dig duke-out was triggered by the alleged involvement of police in the kidnap-slay of a Korean in Angeles City.
Admittedly, it was a shocking slap, an image-shaming on the very core of police reputation. Thus, the shift from illegal drug operations to police-cleansing is a totally welcome move. It can only mean one thing: hardcore corrupt policemen continue to crawl in the corridors of police turfs.
But it is not enough that suspected policemen are subjected to mere push-ups, or getting dressed down in public. Jail them, maybe? They are suspects, yes, but why punish them with kid gloves in the first place? Ludicrous.
