COMMODITIES WITH SHORT GESTATION

IMPRESSED by the heralded works across the years of the National Integrated Fisheries Technology and Development Center (NIFTDC), Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol directed NIFTDC chief Westly Rosario to conduct more research on projects dealing on commodities with short gestation period to help enhance the country’s food security.

Piñol recommended that research on tilapia, milkfish, white shrimps, sea cucumber, sea weeds and “ulang” (fresh water shrimp) should continue.

Piñol, along with National Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Director Ed Gongona, came from Sual where they distributed bancas and fishing gears for marginal farmers in the 14 coastal waters of Pangasinan.

They visited the NIFTDC upon the invitation of former Speaker Jose de Venecfia Jr. and his son, Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia.

Piñol reiterated that under president Rodrigo Duterte, he will draw up a 10 to 20-year national road map on agriculture and fisheries that can be implemented whoever will succeed the Duterte administration.

Citing the United States experience, a 10-year National Road Map in Agriculture and Fisheries was approved by law that not even President Barack Obama can alter or amend.

The new administration can add funds to the existing plan but cannot amend it, he said.

Piñol said he will ask governors throughout the country to submit their respective proposed road maps which will be the basis for the national road map. (Leonardo Micua)
