THE regional office of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA RO1) has expressed optimism that a drug- free Ilocandia is possible as it reported strides after its 226 successful anti-narcotics operations in the region in 2016.

In his report, PDEA Regional Director Jeffrey Tacio said their operations led to 271 arrests of suspected drug personalities.

Tacio said “PDEA RO1 either jailed or neutralized 27 notorious drug group members, six wanted listed criminals, six government officials, two foreign nationals and 13 elected officials involved in the illegal drug trade garnering the regional office a commendation from the agency for the highest number of arrested elected officials.”

It confiscated some 2.2 kilos of shabu valued at almost P31 million.

Tacio said the illegal marijuna plantations have been dealt a great blow as well:  386.9 kilos were either burned or confiscated valued at P19.3 million.

He said seized were 389, 530 pieces of plants and seedlings found in the tri-boundaries of Ilocos Sur, La Union and Benguet together with 264 grams of marijuana seeds.

PDEA RO1 not only surpassed its operational targets for 2016 but was also at the forefront in its information drive as dedicated personnel visited schools, private establishments, barangays to lecture and discuss the evils of illegal drugs, he said.

The agency organized 362 lectures that targeted 12,100 participants, “to help mold people and their communities.”

He credited the support of the Police Regional Office 1, under P/Chief Supt. Gregorio Pimentel and his Police Provincial Directors for the substantial gains they achieved.

Tacio is optimistic the new year will offer more opportunities to rid Ilocandia of the scourge of narcotics. (Tita Roces)
