REMEMBERING MAMASAPANO

SAN NICOLAS—The mother of a member of Special Action Force’s (SAF) renowned Gallant 44 from this town killed in the bloody Mamasapano encounter in Maguindanao two years ago, still cries for justice.

Helen Mejia, mother of PO2 Ephraim Mejia said she still longs for truth to come out.

“Who killed them? Who should be held answerable for their deaths?” Helen asked.

Managot ang dapat managot (There must be someone who should be held accountable),” she said.

She said up to now, she still cries whenever she remembers her son, especially whenever she sees men in uniform.

She said Ephraim was only 33 when he was killed in the bloody encounter and would have turned 35 years old only this year.

Ephraim’s wife, Miya, was in Manila for a scheduled dialogue with President Duterte in Malacañang on Tuesday together with widows of slain SAF 44 on the eve of the Mamasapano massacre’s second anniversary.

Helen said Miya and her four-year-old daughter live in Barangay Cacabogaoan here. “They are okay but it would have been better if Ephraim were still alive,” she said.

Ephraim’s remains were buried in a cemetery in this town where Helen and their relatives often visit.

“Life was never the same again. He was our breadwinner then,” Helen said of her son.

Helen said she misses the times when Ephraim would come home at least every three months and would ask her what “pasalubong” she wants for him to bring.

“His memories when he was still alive are still fresh in my mind,” Helen said. (Tita Roces)
