Victorio Edades Exhibit features students’ artwork

MAYOR Belen T. Fernandez was impressed by the artwork of students of the Dagupan City National High School (DCNHS) Special Program in the Arts and Arts and Design Track when she opened the Victorio Edades Exhibit at the city museum on December 5 as part of the 2016 city fiesta on the theme ‘Love, Live, Celebrate Balon Dagupan 2016!
The different paintings are the artwork of Grade 9 and 10 students in honor of the city’s first National Artist Victorio Edades, also known as “El Artista Moderno,” being known as the ‘Father of Modern Arts’.
Edades came from a humble family in Bolosan and after finishing high school at the age of 21, he studied in the United States where he learned modern arts.
“Their work are no longer the works of amateurs. Their paintings are work of professional artists,” said Fernandez, referring to the paintings by the students.
The art exhibit was introduced by the city fiesta committee led by Epee Rafanan as the Executive Chairman and Councilor Dennis C. Canto as the ‘Hermano Mayor’ in cooperation with the DCNHS Special Program in the Arts and Arts and Design Track.
The paintings of the students feature different portraits of Edades, different places in Dagupan and the people of the city on exhibit are “Edades, The Younger Years” by Ivan Escobar and John Cris; ‘Edades Portraiting Himself’ by Rizza Agustin, Winona Elise Bautista and Rosemarie Callejo; ‘Edades by Gem Castillo’; ‘El Artista Moderno’ by Rosalyn Gipa, Maryelle Esteves, and Shamel Galvan; and ‘Edades’ by Wally Hondrada.
‘Quintos Bridge’ by Ivanne Escobar; ‘Bonuan Beach’ by Rosalyn Gipa; ‘An Afternoon at the Dredger’ by Mary Rose Tiangco; ‘Home Along’ by LJ Jimenez; ‘Pantal Riverside’ by John Cris and Ivanne Escobar; and ‘St. John’s Cathedral’ by Rizza Agustin, Winona Elise Bautista and Rosemarie Callejo.

“Bilib talaga ako sa batang Dagupenyo hindi lang sa sports, sa music, sa journalism and now sa arts. We will continue to assist our children in honing their skills and talents in painting to be like our national artist Victorio Edades,” said Fernandez, adding this is the very reason why she allotted a budget for the construction of a new home for the young artists.
“Nakita ko how dilapidated and unsafe na yong building na kinlalagyan nila where they paint and preserve their works and so in support of their talent we are now constructing a new building for them,” said Mayor Fernandez.
The city-funded building of the Special Program in the Arts and Arts and Design Track will soon be opened in time for the next school year. Present during the opening was Diosdado Cayabyab, the Education Supervisor for Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health along with the student’s adviser Emmanuel C. Toledo.
To honor Edades, the young artists proposed that an ordinance be passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod declaring every December 23, the birth date of Edades, as Edades Day where big events in painting will be held every year. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
