Shabu price in Region 1 now P40,000 per 5 grams

PRICE of shabu in Region 1 is at its highest at P40,000 per bulto (five grams), according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency regional director.

Jeffrey Tacio said the skyrocketing price increase is due to the intensified drive against illegal drugs launched since the Duterte administration took over.

“We have gained grounds and our anti-drug campaign is on the right track,” he said.

He added that last semester, a bulto of shabu only cost P3,500.

Tacio said it is difficult now to peddle shabu because police and anti- narcotics operatives are tightly guarding movements of suspected pushers and financiers.

Shabu supply in Region 1 originates from the National Capital Region and Region 4-A, he said.

Because of the unaffordable shabu price now, drug users have shifted to marijuana being sold at P25 per gram, he said.

He said the shift to marijuana is evident in their buy-bust operations.

“We no longer seize grams of shabu but sachets of 0.2 or 0.3 gram only,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tacio said 50 percent of the barangays in Region 1 have already been drug-cleared.

In terms of accomplishments in buy-bust operations, Region 1 is always in top 5 nationwide, he added. (Tita Roces)
