Lingayen – The 8th Pangasinan Open Chess Tournament, which is the last and the toughest chess tournament of the 2016 Pangasinan Chess Festival, kicked off on December 17 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center (PTDC), here.
Hundreds of rated and non-rated chess players who hail from Pangasinan along with various provinces and cities in the country vied for supremacy in the open and 14-year old and below categories of the chess tournament.
The PCF, the country’s first provincial government unit – initiated sports development program benefiting Pangasinense and non-Pangasinense chess players, was launched under the administration of former Pangasinan Governor and now 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr., and is now being continued by the present provincial leaders of the elder Espino’s son and namesake, Governor Amado ‘Pogi’ I. Espino, III.
Held annually in partnership with the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL), the PCF is composed of Chess Federation of the Philippines – sanctioned chess clinics which are conducted every September, and three consecutive chess tournaments, namely: Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship staged every October, Pangasinan Chess Championship held every November and the Pangasinan Open Chess Tournament slated every December
Governor Espino led the chess tournament’s opening program on December 17 at 9AM at the PDTC. The chess event’s closing program was held on the following day, December 18 in the afternoon.
PCL President Juan Vicente Sison said that while the PCF extends its scope year by year, it also has become a training ground for local chess players who are now known in the national and international chess competitions.
Up for grabs in the open chess tournament were the championship trophies and pot prizes amounting to Php25,000 for the open category and Php10,000 for the 14-years old and below.
