Pangasinan as ‘The Christmas Province’
PANGASINAN is again in the national news, not the kind that Pangasinenses can be proud of. The De Lima-Dayan saga highlights nothing but insidious and criminal about their relationship and links to the illegal drug trade.
There is one happy story to be told about Pangasinan but it’s a story that can only excite others when it is experienced. We refer to the Christmas festive, bright colorful mood in Bayambang town.
Only the townsfolk of Bayambang can now lay claim to a boast that theirs is the only town in the region that hosts a colorful and fascinating show of automated Christmas characters and display of creative interpretations of the Nativity scene using indigenous materials around the brightly lit town.
If the Quiambao administration commits to produce the unique and exciting Christmas presentation every year, then Pangasinan shall have created another popular tourism activity albeit seasonal, making the province, Bayambang, in particular, the place to visit during Christmas season.
The provincial government can take the cue from Bayambang and develop a Christmas program promoting colorful Christmas activities in as many public plazas in the province.
The objective? To establish Pangasinan as the Christmas province in the country.
Like father, like children
UNASSAILABLE data have showed that Marcos had stolen billions of pesos/dollars from Philippine coffers as Philippine dictator during the martial law years from 1972-1986. Only when People Power banished Marcos to Hawaii did his greed was put to an end 30 years ago.
We have recovered merely a fraction of what Marcos had stashed away and deposited in Swiss banks. An American court has found Marcos guilty of plundering national treasure, murder and massive violation of human rights. Amid all these, his heirs never showed a semblance of remorse.
No, they will never apologize, they had said, for the strongman’s crimes against the Filipino people.
Worst, they even stole his burial at the hallowed grounds of the Libingan ng Mga Bayani. Like father, like children. So, be not surprised, anymore. What the father did, the children could only replicate them. Unabashedly. Guilt never runs in their veins.
