NO TO 2ND POWER PLANT

SUAL—Nothing will stop the Save Sual Movement in opposing the planned construction of a second power plant here. It will launch a signature campaign on Oct. 30 in the town parish on Oct. 30 at 8:00 a.m.

Rosanna Soriano, head of the movement, said a Mass will be held and she will give a message at the end of the religious rite.

Former Vice Mayor Alex Rigonan said once they have gathered enough signatures to support their manifesto, copies will be sent to President Duterte, Environment Secretary Gina Lopez, the provincial government and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, notwithstanding the memorandum of agreement already signed last year between the PHIMMA Energy Corporation (formerly Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corporation) and the municipal government for the construction of the second power plant.

He said he is confident the movement can duplicate the success of other communities in opposing the construction of a coal power plant.

“We already have a 1,200 megawatts (MW) power plant operated by TeaM Energy so why add another 900 MW?” Rigonan said.

He said the movement will make sure the people’s voice will be heard.

The manifesto cites the health risks to the populace and the harmful effects to the environment if another coal-fired power plant will be constructed. (Tita Roces)
