Reformatory center offers new life to drug users

SAN CARLOS CITY—The first batch of reformed drug users enrolled at the Reformatory Center in the city is expected to complete the program that consists of
skills trainings and spiritual guidance for renewed life.
Vice Mayor Julier Resuello told the DWIZ’s Engkwentro media forum the center’s program is the first in Pangasinan that started operation on Oct. 6 and the graduation of the first batch from the Reformatory Center will be held next week.
The program is being implemented by convenors, including a priest from the Catholic Church.
“We want them to be re-integrated into the society right away and face new life,” the vice mayor said.
“These are victims of drug addiction. They are not pushers. They were users,” he pointed out.
Reformatory Center accepts 40 to 50 drug users monthly, mainly those who surrendered and were processed by the police.
They are housed in the center, provided with comfortable bedrooms, free meals thrice a day, and training from the Technical Education Skills Development Authority in haircutting, massage, pedicure, manicure and mushroom culture.
He said the city government initially provided P500,000 for the operation of the center located in Barangay Bonifacio here.
He added that access to the center’s program is free to the processed drug user.
So far, some 600 drug users classified as working and non-working expressed willingness to undergo the 30-day reformatory program.
He said Mayor Joseres Resuello has committed to continuously support the program by continuously appropriating funds for the program.
Meanwhile, the vice mayor said out of 86 barangays, three were initially declared as drug-free. (Tita Roces)
