URDANETA CITY – Some 12,000 hectares of farmlands, benefitting 10,000 farmers, will still be irrigated by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in 2017.

This was the timetable presented by Engr. Ceferino Sta. Ana, assistant project manager of the Agno River Irrigation System Extension Project (ARISEP) in an updates on the P2.6 billion irrigation project that started construction in July 2015.

Sta. Ana said as of September 15, 2016, the physical target for project facilities, field support, institution development program, pre-construction and detailed engineering and right-of-way acquisition are all on-target.

However, only 16.62 % from the original 45.11% target for the engineering and construction works for the Agno River Irrigation System (ARIS) have been accomplished. The Ambayaoan-Dipalo River Irrigation System (ADRIS) also accomplished only 6.05% from the 36.52% target.

He said despite delays encountered due to typhoons and monsoon rains, the project is still expected to accomplish 60% completion before the year ends.

Sta. Ana said the ARISEP located in Rosales town, with its upgraded system, will improve the efficiency of the system and help increase the crop yield and cropping intensity.

“Production of farmers will increase from 2.8 metric tons per hectare to 5.0 metric tons per hectare,” the project manager said.

From the farmers’ present average of P29,000 income per hectare per cropping is projected to reach P47,520, he added. (VHS_PIA-Pangasinan)
