WAR ON DRUGS

URDANETA CITY—A policeman, listed as a high value target in the drug trade, and his father were arrested in a raid in their houses on Oct. 28 in Asingan and Villasis towns, where sachets of suspected shabu and illegal firearms, ammunitions and a grenade were found.

P/Supt. Jackie Candelario, deputy police director for operation of Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, identified the arrested suspects as P02 Verson Mamerto and his father, Virgilio Mamerto.

The team was composed of operatives from the Pangasinan Police, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Verson is assigned in San Nicolas Police Station as patroller while his father is a farmer.

Candelario said Verson is a high value target (level 2) in illegal drugs and is also reportedly involved in gun-for-hire activities.

All the seized firearms will be subjected to cross matching (ballistic examination) to determine if these were previously used in previous shooting incidents in Pangasinan, he said.

The police conducted the raids based on search warrants from the Regional Trial Court in this city on Verson’s two houses in Asingan town and one in Villasis town and Virgilio’s residence in Asingan where assorted guns, ammunition, grenade and shabu were seized.

“We want to show that we do not condone involvement of our policemen in illegal activities. There are no sacred cows here,” Candelario said. “This is a proof that the PNP is serious in its campaign against illegal drugs,” he added.

Among the seized firearms were caliber .45, air rifle, M1 Garand, AK47. About 25 grams of suspected shabu were also confiscated at the house in Asingan and other sachets of suspected shabu and a grenade in Villasis.

Charges for violation of R.A. 10591 (firearms and ammunition), R.A. 8294 (explosives) and R.A. 9165 for illegal drugs against the father and son Mamerto.

The police will also file administrative case for grave misconduct against the young Mamerto. (Tita Roces)
